Many of us are used to talking to God through prayer, but have you ever considered writing a letter instead? You might be pleasantly surprised by the results.
When I came across this article about a little girl who wrote a letter to God, I was touched by how simple and meaningful it was. Children are especially connected to the spirit world, and we can learn a lot from them. In this particular story, Meredith, a four-year-old girl, was so saddened by the death of her beloved dog that she decided to write a letter to God to make sure her pet was taken care of in heaven. Meredith told God that she was grateful for the experience of having a pet in the first place, and that she hoped God would recognize her dog so they could play together.
With the help of her mother, Meredith put plenty of stamps on her letter, slipped in a photograph of her beloved pet, and put the note in the mailbox. What neither Meredith nor her mother expected was to get a physical response to the letter. But as it so happens, they did. Not long after their trip to the post office, mother and daughter found a package wrapped in gold on their front steps. Inside was the wonderful book, When a Pet Dies, by Mr. Rogers. Even more meaningful, however, was the note attached to the package:
Dear Meredith,
Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away. Abbey isn’t sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog.
Since we don’t need our bodies in heaven, I don’t have any pockets to keep your picture in so I’m sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.
I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I’m easy to find. I am wherever there is love.
Love, God
What an amazing experience to have for both mother and child!
There are so many ways for us to connect with those in the heavenly realm, and it’s a blessing for young Meredith to learn this at an early age. As children, we don’t have to fight through skepticism and disbelief to access God, or to connect with those who have passed away. But as adults, sometimes it’s a challenge to put rationality aside and realize that our loved ones are always within our reach. All it takes is trying, and having the patience to wait for a response.
The next time you want to connect with someone in the celestial realm, whether it is with God, someone who has passed, or to a departed pet, try writing a letter to them. You don’t even have to mail it. While you may not get a package wrapped in gold in response to your letter, you will get without-a-doubt signs if you ask for them.
Many blessings to you!
