Three Main Ways Our Deceased Loved Ones Communicate with Us

Our deceased loved ones are always looking for ways to let us know they are still with us. Although they no longer have a physical body, they continue to reach out with love, reassurance, guidance, and signs from the other side.
Many people miss these communications because they expect them to happen in dramatic ways. But spirit communication is often subtle, gentle, and easy to dismiss unless we understand how it works.
There are three main ways our loved ones most commonly communicate with us: through our thoughts, through our dreams, and through what I call “without a doubt” signs.
1. They Speak to Us Through Our Thoughts
Because our loved ones no longer have a physical body, they often communicate with us telepathically. Their messages can come into our minds as thoughts, words, feelings, or impressions. So, the next time you are thinking of your loved one, make sure to pay attention.
How can you tell the difference between your own thoughts about them and when they are actually speaking to you? A message from them will often seem to “pop” into your mind for no apparent reason.
For example, after my mother passed away, I was driving one day when a thought suddenly entered my mind saying, “Hi sweetheart.” Now, I don’t call myself sweetheart—but my mother did. That was her way of letting me know she was still with me.
A thought from your own mind, on the other hand, will usually begin with something external that may trigger a memory. For example, you may see a photograph of your loved one, and then your mind begins remembering the day the picture was taken or the experiences you shared together.
2. They Visit Us in Our Dreams
Another common way our loved ones communicate is through dreams. However, it is important to understand the difference between a true visitation from them in a dream and a dream created by your subconscious mind.
A true visitation dream will feel incredibly real, peaceful, and loving. After this type of dream, you’ll wake up with a deepknowing that it was truly your loved one visiting you. They may come younger than they were when they were in the physical body; they are healthy again; you may be able to hug them and actually feel them, and so much more.
A subconscious dream, on the other hand, may reflect your fears, grief, or worries. For example, you may dream that your loved one is still ill, lying in a casket, upset with you, or suffering in some way. That is not them. That is your subconscious mind processing emotions and concerns. Your loved ones are now in a state of complete peace and expanded understanding, where suffering and misunderstanding do not exist.
Before going to sleep, ask your loved one to visit you in a dream. You can simply say something like, “Please come to me tonight in a dream and wake me up so that I will remember it.” (If you don’t wake up after a dream from them, you may sleep the whole night and not recall their visitation).
3. They Give Us “Without a Doubt” Signs
Our loved ones also give us what I call “without a doubt” signs—events and experiences that feel too meaningful or unusual to dismiss as coincidence. These signs often happen at the perfect moment, especially when we need comfort, reassurance, or guidance. Here are some of these types of signs they may be giving you:
One very common sign is repeatedly seeing the same numbers over and over again—on clocks, license plates, receipts, or phone numbers. You may continually notice numbers such as 111, 222, your loved one’s birthday, your old address, or any other meaningful combination of numbers.
Animals are another beautiful way our loved ones get our attention. Your loved ones are able to use their energy to go inside of an animal to let us know they are there. For example, a bird may repeatedly peck at your window; a butterfly may encircle you; a ladybug may land on your arm.
Your loved ones also enjoy playing with electricity. Lights may flicker on and off when you are speaking about them or thinking of them; the television may turn on by itself; the garage door may open for no apparent reason.
Even something as frustrating as a car cutting you off may contain a hidden message. Instead of immediately becoming angry, look at the license plate. Loved ones often use license plates to show you meaningful initials, names, or important numbers.
They also may leave you feathers, coins, or other objects. Make sure to save them so that you will have a tangible piece of evidence of these wonderful signs.
The perfect song will come on unexpectedly with the words you need to hear. The song may be their favorite song or one with lyrics that may be very significant to you.
This list can go on and on.
Also, please know that your loved ones can hear you. Make sure to talk to them and tell them anything you wish to say. Then, ask them to give you a “without a doubt” sign to let you know they are aware of what you were saying to them. You will see that they often respond in loving and creative ways.
To sum up, our loved ones in spirit want to communicate with you just as much as you want to communicate with them. Be patient, stay open, and the thoughts, dreams, and signs will come when you least expect them—and exactly when you need them most.
Angel blessings to you now and always!
